I could not let this article pass about benefits from PAS, without adding my very positive view to the statements made to the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee about the Benefits from Publically Available Specifications (PAS).
So here it is! It is simple. I am a great fan of the PAS system as in my view the PAS specifications are very useful to the waste industry, encouraging recycling. The are many benefits from the availability of the recently written PAS specifications , so we could not help blabbering about these specifications. So, in this article we decided to write about the Benefits from Publically Available Specifications, which are covered in the follwing article.

Your blog poster has been involved to a small degree in writing one of the UK PAS documents, and I have also been able to see how powerful the benefits of PAS are. Before PAS100 there was almost no commercial market for compost, even for the very best quality garden waste compost. Peat based compost reigned supreme and there was no willingness amongst garden centres and supermarket home departments to start selling sustainable compost alternatives, as the buyers were all concerned that there was no commonly known and understood quality standard available which would enable them to provide a consistent product nationally from a variety ofsuppliers.
All that has changed completely now, and the change started when the original PAS100 was issued. The success should now be continued with the issuing recently of an updated version of the PAS.
Another great feature and the reason why much of the benefits from PAS are being realised is that they are publically available on the web for free. Unlike normal “standards documents” , they are not hidden by requirements for membership which effectively means that only those in the industry ever get to see the specification in its entirety. Instead, they are laid out on websites for all to see and understand what they are buying. This is excellent and many other specifications should be made open to the public in the same way.
