The councils were referring in particular to the publication by WRAP earlier this year of a revised PAS 100 standard for quality compost which places tighter limits on the physical contamination compost can contain (see letsrecycle.com story) .

What do you think about the revised PAS 100 and the fact that it forces UK Councils to stop sending cardboard for composting?

Is this a GOOD MOVE – because it will improve the quality of the compost, make it worth more CASH for your Council, and reduce YOUR RATES.

Is this a BAD MOVE – because it will mean that MORE CARDBOARD WILL BE SENT TO LANDFILL which will fill up the landfills quicker and mean that the landfills contan more organic material when everyone knows that organic material in landfills means more smells and more landfill gas. We all want to reduce landfill.

Mike Owen, Shropshire council’s cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:

“We’re really disappointed with this change as it means we will have to change a system which has successfully reduced the amount of waste going to landfill in the county over the last few years.

“The changes in regulations being imposed at a national level will undoubtedly cause some inconvenience. However, residents can continue to recycle their cardboard by taking it to one of our Household Recycling Centres.”

Will YOU take your waste cardbaord to a Household Recycling Centre? Would that even make sense due to the petrol you will burn (causing emissions of Carbon Dioxide inot the atmosphere – causing additional global warming) to get to your Household Recycling Centre?

Please comment below on what you think about this development which is due to the revised PAS 100.
