With pressure on Council’s to achieve cost efficiences in their waste disposal, and the big potential for income from the sale of compost, now that chemical fertilisers are becoming so expensive, coupled with the many advantages in soil improvement that compost gives, has pompted this announcement for more UK Composting Quality Control, from the CIWEM.

The CIWEM is the UK professional body otherwise known as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, and they have a strong voice with UK waste management professionals. This call is close to the point that many UK recyclers have been making recently which is embodied in the statement often made, “Quality is King”. It is no good recycling if nobody wants to buy your recycled product. Buyers want reliable and good quality, so as the CIWEM says, the UK waste management industry must do better composting quality control in order to advance, and this is somethign which all should do together for the good of the industry and raising recycling rates generally.

CIWEM calls for composting control

Farming UK

We quote some of the Farming UK article sent out today:

At a time when the weekly bin collection is being debated, CIWEM believes composting is one option not to be overlooked. Composting plays a key role in helping local authorities and businesses to achieve targets to increase recovery rates and divert

In its new policy position statement, CIWEM calls for a clear regulatory footing for controls on composting treatment to produce quality materials whilst minimising environmental pollution and risks to human health.

Composting is a well-established natural method for treating, sanitising and stabilising organic materials such as green waste, fruits and vegetables, cardboard and wood. It is undertaken on both a small and large scale, ranging from home composting bins to centralised sites that compost thousands of tonnes every year from commercial, industrial and agricultural sources.

CIWEM’s Executive Director, Nick Reeves OBE, says:

“The composting industry has grown rapidly in recent years. CIWEM recognises that standards are necessary to protect environmental and human health and provide further market confidence in the quality of the product. We support the efforts of both Government and the commercial sector to develop and implement quality controls and also urge the Government to set increasingly challenging recycling and landfill diversion targets to increase rates of recovery and recycling.”

Here at Compost.me we are 100% in favour of this. What is your view though?

Tell us what you think about composting quality control and how you would improve it. We have already been discussing the banning of cardboard in compost. Do yo want composting companies and local authorities to go further?

Use our comments section below to give us your view, and we will be very happy to publish – as long as it complies with all normal requirements of ethics, decency, and legality etc!
