Diaper Composting in UK Ireland, Australia and Mainland Europe to Be Sponsored by Huggies

Diaper Composting

Are disposable nappies the best nappy type for the environment?

Kimberly-Clark, owner of the Huggies Brand has signed a sponsorship agreement with a New Zealand company that plans to build diaper composting facilities in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and mainland Europe.

Diaper composting has long been a possibility worth going for, since one relaises that in the industrialized nations something like 3% of our landfill volume is nothing but disposable nappies! That’s, I think, the largest single product type by volume in our landfills.

If diapers (nappies) can be composted or anaerobically digested and not sent to landfill we will remove a significant volume of waste from landfill annually, at a stroke! For me. and for this reason alone, this article has my vote!

Huggies and Kimberly Clark are very forward thinking to invest in this approach, and to be highly commended for this initiative. We ask that you consider visiting the linked web page below in order to read the full article. By doing that you will also, in a small way, show your interest in this very ” green” and environmentally beneficial action by the Huggies management.

Let me whet your appetite for this sponsorship a bit more by providing the following quotation from their article:

Disposable diapers are a modern convenience for busy moms and dads, but they create an enormous amount of waste – 3.8 million diapers a year in the U.S. alone, according to the EPA’s latest figures.

But Kimberly-Clark, maker of health and hygiene products, is looking to find a more environmentally responsible way to dispose of its iconic Huggies-brand diapers, announcing yesterday that it has signed a sponsorship agreement with a New Zealand company that plans to build diaper composting facilities in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and mainland Europe over the next 18 months.

Under the agreement, Kimberly-Clark will have the first right of refusal to sponsor any composting plants constructed by Envirocomp, a diaper composting subsidiary of New Zealand facilities services company OSC.

What do you think now about the most environmantally sustainable type of nappy?

Are traditional washable cotton diapers (nappies) the best for the environment, or are the dispodable types like “Huggies” going to be the best for the environmentally aware and responsible parent to use?

Your comments are VERY WELCOME as we would love to open a debate on this subject right here on this web page.
