Although most towns provide pickup for leaves, most homeowners and gardeners can take advantage of leaves through composting. This story appears in the print edition of Daily Journal. Subscribers can read the entire story online by signing in here or

Blue RidgeNow.Com tells us what they recommend in the following quotefrom their web page:

“If you are looking for additional options for your fallen foliage, you could create a composting bin. A big pile of leaves will decompose, but very slowly. To speed things up, shred leaves by raking them in a big pile and mow over them several times.

More than 25 percent of the typical household’s waste is yard trimmings and food scraps. Starting a compost bin helps get rid of your yard waste as well as your household organic waste. It also provides you with excellent fertilizer.”

The Daily Jouranl thinks similarly in this quote from their article:

“By mid-November, most of the trees have lost their leaves with the exception of some oak species. If you have not dealt with your leaves up to this point, now is the time to take action.

Although most towns provide pickup for leaves, most homeowners and gardeners can take advantage of leaves through composting.”

So there you are. It’s official go compost your leaves. Nobody wants the cost to your local waste authority of sending them all those leaves, and just about everyone will complain if you burn your leaves in a built-up area, due to the smoke you will produce across the neighborhood.

Leaves are not as high in nutrients as the summer growth, due to the manner in which trees avoid waste and re-absorb and remove many of the nutrients from their leaves before they die, but they will still build soil quality from the woody matter, and composting then works best if mixed with grass cuttings and annual planting which ceased flowering and has been removed from flower borders.
