Puma Compostable Trainers and T-Shirts to Be Manufactured

Puma Compostable Trainers AndPuma has made a huge promise today to produce highly sustainable Puma compostable trainers and T-shirts, in a development which could well be the start of a movement that will be capable of raising the level of composting across the globe to a whole new level. For such a prominent and fashion-led sports wear designer/manufacturer to make this pledge is something which in our opinion will be for composters (at this level) both new, and inspiring!

Many other clothing manufacturers will now have to follow, or lose out.

All forms of clothing which are made from natural fibers will compost, and indeed will need to be composted if the worlds landfills are going to be brought back to being small enough for the communities that fill them to be able to afford to engineer them in a manner which will be sustainable for the environment.

The following quotation from the German company explains what has been announced:

“We are confident that in the near future we will be able to bring the first shoes, T-shirts and bags, that are either compostable or recyclable, to the market,” Puma boss Franz Koch told the German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

He explained that the company was working with partners on developing products [like Puma compostable trainers] on the principle of the ”cradle-to-cradle” design. ”It follows two circuits, the technical and the biological: I can use old shoes to make new ones or something completely different, such as car tyres,” said Koch, who has led the sports clothing company since July.

“In the biological cycle, I can make shoes and shirts that are compostable so I can shred them and bury them in the back garden. We are working on products that meet these two criteria.”

Last year the sportswear company revealed its five-year sustainability strategy with the unveiling of its Clever Little Bag, a reusable bag produced to replace shoeboxes and made from 65% less paper as well as having a reduced water, energy and diesel consumption.”

We might look back later on this day, and be able to say that this was when mainstream businesses began to really take seriously the sustainability of their propducts. Do you agree?
