Its a fact that in order to get started in the new craze of worm composting you will need to invest in a good worm composter. If you have even a small back yard and are UK based a really top design is the Worm Works 3 Tier Wormery. This is very similar to the US’s favourite back yard worm composter for kitchen scraps etc, which is the “Worm Factory”. This design has many advantages as the design allows or three stages of worm composting as the compost matures. The tiers at any time include progressively older composts and this means that whenever the compost is ready to use the worms in that compost will always gain a ready new home when the tray/tier in which they have been living is emptied and they are moved into the newly filled tier and that tray is placed on the top again.

After almost 6 months though I’m still only on the first tray, and the only output has been some of the “juices” to use as plant fertilizer. I have been disappointed at how small of a fraction of our kitchen scraps have been able to go in it. On the other hand it does not smell, and is easy to move in and out of the house as the weather allows.

I’m anxiously awaiting spring and warmer weather to hope it gets better and the worms become more established and start eating more.

Well, that’s not such a big recommendation, however, she didn’t criticise the product at all – just the rather slow (and probably by her account also) rather cold worms! Maybe the UK winter is a bit cold for worm culture, but also she may not have either enough worms or the right type.

This is the US Worm Factory DS3GT 3-Tray Worm Composter which is almost identical to the UK wormery, and gets truly great reviews. Maybe the Americans are just more experienced at this game?

Another Amazon customer review, again seems to indicate that this is a good product, and here is our quote from that:

Although the instructions were a bit vague, probably the only critisism, hence 3 stars. The Wormery was assembled and began operation very quickly and the worms are busy producing. Good product but will need to see how much we get from it based on price. I view the Wormery as a novelty rather than a ‘Must Have’.
