The UK Waste News is buzzing with the news that their massive investment as part of the Integrated Waste management Contract (the largest for a single Local authority client in Europe) is bearing fruit with the completion of its New IVC Commercial composting Network. This has enabled us to bring the news from a variety of sources. It’s called a mash-up and it is part of what this blog is all about. We bring you the news on a curation basis. Which means that you get the most balanced perspective from being able to visit multiple articles from our site. This New IVC Commercial composting Network is the product of many years of planning, and shows that despite economic difficulties, the UK is marching forward with its development of waste facilities to compete with the best in the world. (I would say that wouldn’t I as I am a Brit! But, I happen to think it is true…) Here is our mashed together selection of the most recent news articles on this subject:

Now in our usual style we will give you a flavour of the content here, to encourage you to visit the original linked pages, with some ethical quotes:
Greater Manchester’s state-of-the-art recycling and waste management network is drawing closer to completion with 37 of the 42 facilities being developed under its £4 billion waste PFI contract now finished.
The facilities are being built as part of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority’s (GMWDA) 25-year waste disposal contract with Viridor Laing, signed in April 2009 (see letsrecycle.com story). They include a combination of Mechanical Biological Treatment and In-Vessel Composting plants, a Materials Recovery Facility and Household Waste Recycling Centres, across 27 sites.
That was LetsRecycle’s quote and here is one from Costain:
In a three year contract signed in April 2009, Costain is constructing a combination of waste treatment sites as part of a 25 year private finance scheme worth £3.8bn. Contractor Viridor Laing won the contract which provides 5,000 new jobs and the opportunity to take more than 75% of Greater Manchester’s waste away from landfill.
Costain is constructing 42 facilities across Manchester including the country’s first Mechanical Biological Treatment – Anaerobic Digestion plant (MBT) to treat waste and produce green energy. Costain is also constructing In-Vessel Composting (IVC) plants, a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), as part of the scheme to drastically cut the city’s waste going to landfill sites.
The contract covers the design and build of 42 facilities spread across 27 sites. These include 24 HWRCs, five MBTs, four IVCs, one MRF, seven Transfer Loading Stations and two Green Waste facilities. The programme is due for completion next year.
Now how about commenting, before you leave us? Is this Brit (your blogger) justified in claiming Greater Manchester’s waste facilities and especially the New IVC Commercial Composting Network to be “Worlsd Class”, for example?
